North Shore Animal League

We adopted a puppy at 5 weeks old in February 2017. We
took him into our home and showered him love and attention. He has always been a very playful boy playing alongside my two grandsons 4 and 7 years old at the time.
The puppy has since grown to about 50 pounds, barks excessively, destroys everything in sight and knocks the boys off their feet. They are now afraid of this dog. It's very difficult to walk him on a leash because of him tugging. We have tried different types of leashes and nothing seems to solve this problem. To make matters worst my husband has cancer and does not need this dog in putting on us.
We tried to return our dog on Sat February 10 and was told he had pass a behavioral test which we agreed to. The dog was taken away for a short time by a gentle man referred to as a trainer. After a short wait we were told our dog was too agressive so Northshore was not able to take him back. Mind you we were not present during this so called test, so they can say whatever. What are we supposed to do? We have since called so many no kill shelters, only to be told there is no room. One thing I know for sure is that I would never adopt from Northshore Animal League or recommend anyone to do so.

Being treated like a criminal, discrimination

I am making a complaint to north shore animal leader in port Washington Ny. I adopted a family dog over 20
Years ago and had success from this. I figured I would come back again since I recently got married. I was trying to adopt a kitten. After going thru the adoption process application we were asked about a previous cat that my wife owned. North shore animal league treats there customers like criminals based on facts that were over 10 years ago all, because she had a aggressive cat in the past and that she could not handle keeping so she went to a local shelter to give away. In north shores eyes we not do enough to save The animal. They also were saying to me that u are married twice and therefore I can not adopt! I had to wait after being interviewed with one of her staff only to tell me 3 hrs later outside the building that we were denied. Very bad attitude with there personal and
I give them 0 ratings. Will never go back there again! Very bad business! If u look at yelp or google u will see people with similar comments!

Discrimination

We were at the North Shore Animal league today a no kill animal shelter in Port Wahington, NY. One of the managers outright discriminated against my family and I. First off we were the only Black family (my husband, and my 3 kids ages 11, 8, and 2). There were about 30 or so families mostly white very few Hispanics. We entered the building about 7:25pm and immediately went to the puppy section and fell in love with a female pup. We asked to hold her and an employee told us several times don't let her fall while I'm holding the pup!! She told me at least 10 times!! Really?? I'm a mother of 3 and a critical care RN, and owned 3 dogs as a child/teenager growing up. I think I know how not to let a dog fall!! So after my kids named her, we decided to adopt and filled out the paperwork. After waiting 2 and half hours (we were told the wait was about an hour) I asked how far along they were with my application since I also had my 2 year old with me. The manager who took my application White Blonde hair lady said well we couldn't reach one of your references I said oh ok, can I give you a different number for her? She said ok. It was 10:30pm. At 10:55pm, I asked a staff member if she can check how long more on my application because we were the ONLY ones left by then. She said sure. Two minutes later 2 Black security officers one in uniform one without said my application is denied and we need to leave the building because they are now closed. Really!!! She couldn't even come and tell me in person. So I asked to speak to her and I was told if I don't leave they will call the cops!!! Wait you are calling the cops because the Black woman ask calmly and professionally to speak to a White manager who had no decency to tell us the only BLACK family there who got denied that our application is denied. My children watched every one of the 30 or so families there leave with a dog or cat. My 8 year old daughter asked if it was because we looked different and I started sobbing because I knew it was. I mustered the courage to say "no honey we just couldn't get the puppy tonight." Yes, a black Married couple, my husband a Government Employee and me a RN, homeowners with a yard, six feet tall yard fence all around yet we could not get a small puppy and the manager couldn't even tell us in person. She sent 2 Black security officers to tell us the sad news!!! When I tried to ask a male staff to speak to the manager, he told me well she is busy right now she can't come talk to you. Yep, that's right a manager too busy to talk to her customers. Yes, that is the America we live in!!! So we will purchase a puppy soon!! We will be the best loving dog owners. My kids are devastated. I just wished they didn't witnessed this blatant discrimination towards us tonight.

Dog qualities

We adopted a dog, Mollie from NSAL 7 yrs ago. The card on her kennel stated she was good w kids, people, other animals. She has always been aggressive, overly protective of her items including her food to the point we have to lock her up in order to put food bowl down so she can eat. She growls & snarls at everyone except my husband. We were told NSAL trained the dog but yet we had to have her trained again because we have grown attached & love her very much. We were also told she was a Lab & shepard mix. The vet told us she is part chow. Chows Are an extremely aggressive breed & not good w children. NSAL knew of our small dogs & our young children but yet were shady in being truthful about the dog. I have always had dogs big n small my entire life. She has attacked my small dog Oreo 3x that wre very bad, she knocked out his teeth, puntured his litle body. We all love Mollie very much but she has also bit the neighbor & the mailman just breaking skin not so terrible for stitches or anything, just broke surface of skin.We have tried tirelessly for 7 yrs to give her a chance but I cannot sit back until something terrible happens. Shes getting worse as shes getting older. I have spken to so many animal professionals & they all say euthanasia. I am so devastated that my dog has to be put down because shes aggressive, untrainable and cannot be adopted out. If NSAL did their job & did not lie about the dog, Mollie would have had a good life. I have young kids & elderly parents & 3 little dogs. I have to lock Mollie up constantly or muzzle her when people are visiting & so on. This is not fair to Mollie. NSAL should be put out of business because of their shady practices. It makes me sick that they have such appalling practices & they blacklist you for wanting to return an adoptee. Which we have spoke to them on occassion about the problem w no solution other than us being blacklisted from ever being able to adopt anywhere. Really?? They lie & you & your dog pay the price. Seriously something needs to be done.

the staff in No 3 door of Vet's Clinic

On Saturday, June 4, 2016, I went to No 3 door of Vet's Clinic to have my both dogs checked. Dr. Mirchel took care of both my dogs' blood work. It was smooth and pleasant. Few days later, Dr. Mirchel informed me that one of my dogs needed another blood work to have further diagnoses. I went at 8:30pm last night, June 14, 2016, this Asian male Vet came out and told me that since I only wanted Dr. Mirchel to explain to me about my dogs' diagnoses, he was going to do the blood work only. I agreed. A female technician helped him to insert the needle into my dog's right leg and tried to withdraw blood, but he pull out and in about 5 times and still couldn't find the blood vessel. He then told me that he had to let someone else do it. After he left, this 5" tall Caucasian woman came in, she wanted to draw the blood on my dog's left leg. The technician helped to hold my dog. The woman tried more than 5 times and couldn't find the blood vessel and made a comment, " the dog' vessel is hard to see." I then replied, “Dr. Mirchel did it with one shot the other day." She looked at me and said, "Then you should let Dr. Mirchel do it!" For the dog's sake, I kept quiet. She finally found the vessel, blood came out a little bit but stayed on the 1/3 of the tiny tube and wouldn't flow out of the body. She got frustrated and said that she wanted to try the artery on the neck. I refused. I suggested her to do it on the right leg since the Asian Doctor didn't get any blood out of it. She then poked another 4 to 5 times and finally got blood out in the tiny tube. Again, it stuck in 1/3 of the tube and didn't flow out. I then noticed that the technician was holding the upper leg very tight and the Caucasian woman held the leg below the needle very tight. So, I suggested to her that if they held upper and lower side of my dog's leg, how would the blood flow? She then answered me in a very mean tone, “Then you should do the blood work." She continued, “I am done." then as she was walking towards back, I was so furious at this moment and I answered, "Watch your attitude." I then complained to the technician about the Caucasian woman’s attitude and wanted to speak to a supervisor. At this time, a man came out of the office and told me to go to the main clinic and Dr. Mirchel is there. After I saw Dr. Mirchel, she suggested to draw blood in the hind leg. She did it once and succeed. I want to praise Dr. Mirchel. She is one of the best Vets I have seen in my life. Meanwhile, there was such a big contrast that this Caucasian woman (I don't even know if she was a Vet or not, she was not wearing the green outfit) treated me with rude attitude. She didn't even tell me who she was, and talked down to me. Dr. Mirchel has solid skills and was so pleasant and courteous.
I would like an apology from that woman. If she doesn't have empathy, then she shouldn't work in this area. I don’t understand why the North Shore Animal Hospital would hire such an unprofessional worker. I would appreciate that if you can look into this matter.
Thank you.

Sincerely,

Lu Liu

Madison

On Sun.9/29/14, while working as a crossposting for Urgent Death Row dogs for NYCAAC, a kill shelter, it came to my attention that an Australian Cattle dog named Madison had previously been adopted from the shelter at North Shore Animal League and was on the euthanasia list at NYCAAC. I phoned NSAL and shared the information. The people I spoke to seemed more interested in who I was and what affiliation I had than in helping Madison, but I finally was told they would look into it. Madison was killed yesterday, and I am beyond angry. I will spend time for now on educating the public on the hypocrisy of this so-called no-kill shelter and encouraging people to direct their donations elsewhere. Poor Madison, crossed over the rainbow bridge before her time, did matter and will be missed. How can we insure this will NEVER happen again?

Very difficult to Adopt a Pet

Tried to adopt an elderly cat named Max -- Staff at North Shore Animal League impossible to deal with, these people are very weird, they don't do what is in the best interest of the animal, even an elderly homeless cat. North Shore Animal League is a HORRIBLE place to go to if you have your heart set on a particular cat or dog. It brings them great joy to reject people, they do it a lot.

adoption

North Shore Animal League. This is a continuation of trying to adopt a cat named Max, an elderly cat placed in a wire cage for almost two months in Petland Stores in New York City and Long Island by North Shore Animal League. North Shore Animal League, just a futile experience to adopt a pet for they just persist in looking for trouble for the animal and the human being just trying to adopt a pet. I know that it is important to check out a prospective individual who wants to adopt a cat or a dog, but if a person provides a lot of personal information which checks out to be true, like where they live (residence) phone numbers, references who know them, veterianarian, etc.that should be sufficient, in other words, people who can testify to their character After giving North Shore Animal League truthful information about myself, my friends, my home, my past dead dog, my past dead cat, this was not enough? The poor animals are getting sick in North Shore Animal Hospital because employees there are looking for any excuse to reject prospective owners. I have never been rejected before for any pet, it is so mean and cruel to lock up a cat in a pet store that is elderly and then when someone who has all the qualifications for adoption comes forward, North Shore Animal League loves to reject the person who is just trying to give a homeless animal a home. The reward for my trying to adopt Max is just rejection for me and for him? He's old, he only has a few years left and North Shore Animal League is quibbling over some petty words. They know that I am qualified but they are too consumed by paranoia and power that they just are killing the 9 1/2 year old cat named Max. It won't be long now, being confined for an elderly cat is just a death blow. I do hope that North Shore Animal League will see the error of its ways. God help them, they know not what they do.

Trying to adopt an old cat named Max is a nightmare

I have been trying to adopt Max, a 9 1/2 old black and white male cat FOR A MONTH FROM NORTH SHORE ANIMAL LEAGUE who had been locked up in a cage in a Petland Store on West 23rd Street in Manhattan, New York City, for more than a month put there by North Shore Animal League and is now in another PETLAND STORE ON LONG ISLAND, PUT THERE AGAIN BY NORTH SHORE ANIMAL LEAGUE??? No one else came forward to adopt Max and after seeing him for a month in the Petland Store in Manhattan, I decided to adopt him. What a nightmare. I am a caring pet owner who had an old cat who died six months ago, have excellent references, a wonderful home that I can give Max with soft beds, toys, food, affection and my two applications that I submitted to North Shore Animal League were rejected for absolutely no reason, except for the paranoid mindset of North Shore Animal League employees. First they said that my friend and reference Sarah, didn't know my pet history when they called her which is not true, my friend Sarah told them I had an old dog and an old cat and this woman Cindy in Adoptions at North Shore Animal League left that out of her notes regarding my reference from Sarah. Cindy in Adoptions at North Shore Animal League told me that I could not adopt this old cat Max because I had a Chihuahua? What? I had told Cindy from the getco that I had a Chihuaha, so why did she make me fill out two applications and give her all of my personal information if I couldn't adopt Max because of the Chihuaha? Why did she make me go through the adoption process knowing that I had a Chihuaha and then reject me because of the Chihuaha? Sounds like bias against me, that Cindy in Adoptions and Pat in Adoptions just decided they didn't like that I said that Max the Cat shouldn't be put in a drafty Petland Store at his old age and that it was cruel for them to do so. So, they rejected me because of what I said to them and they couldn't care less about the animal not being adopted into a good home. I will not give up on Max and my veterinarian and my friend Sarah are calling this woman Johanne at North Shore Animal League to try and straighten out the record and getting the truth into the record about me, so that I can bring this old cat Max home so that he can enjoy the few years left of his unlucky life. Let it be said that North Shore Animal League has made it impossible for many people to adopt pets as they wouldn't know a good pet owner if they fell over one. I have spoken to so many employees at North Shore Animal Hospital and it is so frustrating to communicate with ANY OF THEM, that I wound up hanging up on all of them as they have no common sense and above all, they have no compassion for a senior cat named Max. Every day that goes by and there have been 35 of them, this cat is getting weaker and older -- they just have no reason to reject my applications and above all, hurt this cat and me too! How is it possible that it is okay for North Shore Animal League to lock up an elderly cat in a cage for two months in Petland Stores, but it is NOT OKAY for a caring pet owner who wants to adopt him, let him be adopted. Is it better for this cat to languish in a cage in his senior years when he could have a loving home with soft beds, toys, food, anything his heart desires? Where is the common sense and compassion in North Shore Animal League?
