Reliance/Eco Energy etc... Now It's Mandatory Unagreed To Plumbing Insurance Scams For Their Equipment We Refuse To Buy

Where to begin. First there was the scam where they convinced my dad to sign a 10 year deal and they took our fairly new "old" equipment on the lie that that government was mandating that people had to get newer stuff more environmentally friendly, They told him he'd save money. Their contracts were written by weasels and con artists and iron clad. When people got hip to the scams and complained to the police and government they could no long prey on the elderly door to door. But that wasn't the end of it. Their next scam was to try to get us to buy the equipment. The 10 year term is up in 2 or 3 years. The equipment is old and we don't want it. They've been at us to buy out the contract. We just want the contract to end, so we can get their equipment out of the house, end the contracts and put our own equipment in. And get their liens on our home removed. It you are dealing with these crooks they have you tied in tight and have liens on your home. After employees came to the house trying to get us to buy them out. Lawyers were in touch wanting money for us to get in on class actions suits. Again, a bit late in the game for that. Then other lawyers. Lawyers from an "obligations agency" tried to strong arm us into signing deals to buy the equipment. I told them we were going to ride out the contract and get the equipment removed. The shyster lawyer claimed it was in our contract that we couldn't do that. We had to renew the contract or buy the equipment. Or else the contract would be "automatically renewed" in perpetuity. That's illegal and I told hims so, and thus got a good idea of who he was working for and what a scam artist he was. Further I told him we'd have a lawyer her in Thunder Bay which we would hire, get us out of the contracts when they were about to end. He told me that there were no lawyers in all of the city of Thunder Bay who could deal with this. Which is an highly unethical thing for a lawyer to tell someone. It was all high pressure and he cited clauses in contracts and tried to con me into thinking he had a point. He didn't, I read the contracts later on and the clauses he mentioned didn't exist in the ones my dad signed. The latest thing came in the mail today. Apparently from he head C.E.O. of Reliance, someone named Sean O'Brien. The letter, addressed to my dad states... "By having enrolled in our Plumbing Protection Plan, you can rest assured... then more b.s.". Well, nobody in this house enrolled in any such plan. Nobody asked to be a part of one. Nobody signed anything. Nobody agree to such a thing over the phone. It never happened. This letter (3 pages of gobbledygook in all, goes on to say that starting on March 24th 2023 we would be obliged to pay them a fee every month in the amount of $24.85 per month. Under the heading "cancellation" it states that "your plan is in effect for a one month term, which term shall AUTOMATICALLY be renewed for successive one month terms... Gee and for something we never agree to. Did Hitler win World War Two and put a bunch of Nazis in charge of home heating? How do our police and governments allow this and stand for it. Automatically renewing contracts are blatantly illegal and you cannot bill someone for something they didn't sign on for. I studied enough law in high school to know that much. And of course they want notification. Yet they don't provide a phone number or mailing address for notifying them. My dad signed a few other bad contracts with them. To get him out of them I phoned all day long for weeks on end before finally going to the police to complain, where another family just like ours was complaining of the same scam being pulled on them. I actually read the contracts. Every word of them. Had my dad had ME read them before signing them he never would have signed them. Not over my dead body! The police told me they couldn't do anything - so I went to my Michael Gravelle's office and they were nice enough to fax a letter to them and let them know we wanted out of that contract. Even having done all that they didn't pay us back when they were supposed to and they didn't want to come and remove the equipment. When they came to remove it the person working for them wanted my dad to sign an agreement that he would never sue them. I told him he didn't have to sign anything like that to have the equipment removed. They said they wouldn't remove it if he didn't. And of course they have liens on the property because they conned my dad into accepting their gear, while carting off our perfectly good ac, water heater, furnace, etc... "at no cost". Yeah, at no cost to us. You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out what they did with that equipment they basically STOLE from us. I was on the phone with a rude woman/girl and contradicted herself. She lied and told me I agreed to sign the document when I hadn't and she told me she had a tape of me agreeing. She didn't and if she had any recording of me it was illegally made because I was never notified of being recorded. At which point I told her i was recording that conversation, she flipped out and said she was going to so me. I told her that she recorded me first, so her case would have no grounds. At least I told her I was going to record her. Unfortunately my cheap camera I was using to record with wonked out and I never managed a recording. I then told her that she couldn't force my dad to sign an agreement of any type. And I added "do you know what DURESS IS?". Being a pinhead she didn't. So I told me dad to go ahead and sign it. Noting that the contract to not sue them in exchange for removing the equipment was made under duress and was therefore completely illegal and non-binding on us. In fact, if things continue as they are going I will be taking them to small claims court to sue to get my dad out of the contracts a month or so before they run their course. And if I do so I will win the case. Even their workers who've come to the house have acknowledged that it's a scam. They just keep trying to find new ways to screw people over, to bankrupt them so they came claim your property, and to keep milking the cash cow that our police and governments have allowed them to continue ripping off. It is high time that our governments and police investigated and shut them down once and for all and compensated every single victim of these scammers.

Reliance Water Heater Contract Scam

I was part of a water heater scam back in 2012 and on my moving day a sales rep came by the house and told me to sign this rental agreement if I wanted to keep the water tank. I felt pressured and didn't want to be without a water tank on my first day so I signed the agreement without knowing all of the details and full term of the agreement. I paid monthly rental charges for 10 years until I reached end of term options (as mentioned on the back of the contract). I followed the instructions and gave more than 30 days notice in writing that I was not renewing the rental agreement and returning the equipment. I was given a pending return number and address to return the equipment. Also, the agency appointment was completed and faxed by my agent within 7 days. The issue is that Reliance is still charging me a monthly rental fee for a water heater that was returned. I called customer service and complained about these charges on my Enbridge Gas bill, but nothing has changed. I will file a complaint with BBB and if necessary, I will contact a lawyer to have this matter resolved. Overall, I am frustrated with Reliance and do not recommend this company for any services.

Fraudulent Service Technician - Tankless Water Heater

On February 26, 2022 we had a Reliance Home Comfort Technician come and take a look at our Rheem 2018 Tankless Water Heater as it threw an error code and turned itself off.

The Technician proceeded to tell us that the Tankless Water Heater (2018) was garbage, he wouldn't have this piece of garbage in his own house, etc. We said no, just tell us what the code is about and replace the part. He refused to listen but eventually told us it was the Pressure Switch and we needed a new one.

Since we were selling the house, we told him to go ahead and order the Pressure Switch. He said he would but it would take a week or so since Rheem had to send it to Wolseley (part source place) and it would then be mailed to our address. I thought that was weird but he kept going on about how the heater was so old, garbage, dangerous, etc I wanted to get away from him. He said once we have the part he would come back and replace it.

FYI - we had the Tankless Water Heater maintained by HVAC experts every year.

We waited just under 2 weeks and started calling Reliance asking where the part was. The only call we received was from their Sales Office in Oshawa saying the technician told them we wanted to buy/rent a new Tankless Water Heater. I said no, we never said that, we are just looking for the part. This call came an hour after Reliance Customer Service said they would get a hold of the technician to find out status of the part. Very clear he ignored the part and had sales call us to push renting a new heater. The sales guy was very apologetic and embarrassed when i explained the situation.

We called over the next week a couple times and Reliance said we would get a call about the ETA on the part but never did get that call.

We then decided to get the part ourselves and hire someone else to replace it. We called the Manufacturer and Wolseley (parts place). We then found out that our 2018 Rheem Tankless Water Heater DOES NOT have a pressure switch, pressure sensor or any type of pressure part in it!!!! The technician never ordered a part, it was impossible to order a non existent part. Disgusting.

We then asked them what the error code meant and found out it was because there was a power outage and all we had to do was start the heater back up. That is a safety feature standard on all gas fired appliances and normal.

So this technician was so bent on defrauding us and getting us to rent a NEW Tankless Water Heater, fully knowing what the code was and only had to push the on button again. Left our tenants with lukewarm water for weeks for no reason and lied about the Pressure Switch part - that does not exist - in order to get a sale on a Tankless Water Heater. Thinking if he lets us wait around for weeks we would panic and just order a new heater.

In the meantime, Reliance charged our credit card, 2 days from when the technician came, $351 for a fraudulent visit, non existent part, waiting us out in hopes we would purchase a new heater so he can make a commission, keeping our tenants in lukewarm water (back up electric tank we had) for weeks and frustrating us only to find out all that had to be done was push the on button again.

We would have easily paid the $99 to show up, tell us the problem, turn it back on. Our fault for not realizing that was all that needed to be done. That would have been perfectly fair.

Now we have to argue with Customer Resolution for our money back. All our money. Not paying the visit fee for them to lie and defraud us for weeks and making our tenants uncomfortable for their greed.

Disgusting practices. Wonder how many times this has worked on non suspecting consumers who ended up falling for this scam and rented new appliances when they were not needed.

Reliance account #0161968365362788

Re: Enercare account #080118205116 & Reliance account #0161968365362788

I hope this email finds you well. This is my 3rd attempt at reaching someone who can address our concerns
(September 21, September 28/2021)

On behalf of my mother, Margherita DiBari (I am authorized on her account ), I would like to bring to your attention a matter which I am hoping you can help resolve.

About 2 months ago (maybe more, not sure of the date), I contacted Reliance and obtained quotes for the protection plan in the hopes of saving my elderly mother (she is 87, and is very very ill) some money. She is on a government pension which, as you know, does not go very far.
As such, I made the decision to move the heating & ac protection plan from Enercare to Reliance as I was assured by the reps there was no difference. They also moved the water heater rental over to reliance at the same time.
After further investigation, I found out the Reliance plan was not the same. As such, this prompted me to move the protection plan back to Enercare. I presumed the water heater rental would be part of that transaction as it was when I moved from Enercare to Reliance.

Soon after I received a bill from reliance for the rental water heater thinking that it was the last bill I would receive for this. In fact, on September 9, 2021 I received another bill again for the rental water heater. When I contacted Reliance to have this moved back to the Enercare bill, I was told I had to contact Enercare. When I contacted Enercare, they advised me that this could only be done if we got a new water heater tank installed and they could not guarantee me there would be no extra cost.

So, in an attempt to save my elderly mother who is on a fixed income, some money, I am now faced with multiple bills which may not seem like a big deal to most, but for an older person who does not speak the language and deals with health issues daily, this is indeed a large inconvenience.

My ask if that you put the billing of the water heater rental back on the existing enercare bill so that she has to deal with one bill instead of 2, as it was before I made the change. Please keep in mind the only reason I made the change to Reliance for the protection plan, was that I was mislead to believe that both the Enercare and Reliance plans were the same, no differences.

Please review and I sincerely hope you can help and resolve this our satisfaction.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Best regards,

Cancellation of plan

I had cancelled Reliance System Protection Plan on October 22nd, 2020. Paid the balance in full. However the Reliance Billing department sent me a surprise bill for $241.78 after 9 months. The bill says if you don't pay this we will invoice to collection team. When I called of course you wait for 30 min to get someone from their Indian call center...no one seems know how things works they keep transferring one team to another team to another team. After spending 31/2 hours I found out that the account was closed but their billing department decided to send bills. Finally I am told it is closed like last time but not sure. Reliance most horrible to deal with . Their protection plan sucks.

Unethical continue charging even when their equipment was returned few months ago

I had cancelled water heater contract on line and got delivered their 17 year old water heater at theitn drop off location.
Reliance never stopped charging me every month unethically. Contacted them many times and even talked to supervisor, who had promised to confirm within 24-48 hours. I also sent them multiple reminders and proof of equipment delivery receipt on their communications email but never got confirmation so far.
Sick and tired of calling them. Totally shady and unethical business practices.

Since June 2020, have called them multiple times and even talked to their supervisor, but they continue to charge me every month unethically and never got confirmation of refund even though promised three times in last few months.
I sent so far several emails to their communication email address but never received any response.
Sick and tired of calling or dealing with such a fraudulent company.

Try to force you to sign new Contract

I am currently renting an Air Conditioner from Home Reliance.

At this time my Air Conditioner is not operational. I contacted their service tech, who came out and inspected the unit, the tech then informed me that the Unit was not repairable and that they would install a new unit. I was then informed that I would then HAVE TO SIGN A NEW CONTRACT.

Currently I still have 2 Years and 1 Month (According to their Legal Department) to go on my old contract and that to buy out the contract and have them remove the Non Operational Unit would cost around $1900.00

I informed them that I would accept the replacement unit, However I WOULD NOT SIGN ANY NEW CONTRACT, as the old contract was still valid and that they were responsible to either replace or repair the unit.

I have left several voice messages with the Home Reliance Contact and have not received any calls back. At this time I assume they are avoiding my calls and are hoping that I will either cave in and sign the New Contract or that I will buy out the old contract.

In either case their actions are unacceptable and are in violation of their Contract Agreement.

Crap Service

Call for service when water heater fails. Service guy comes out with no parts. Disappears. Call again. Next day a morw sentient individual shows up - no parts. New water heater on order. 5 days without hot water now.

Both service guys were independents - Reliance does not have on road service people and they do not stock any parts.

Their 24/7 support line is an outright lie. They don't answer the phone before 7am.

Reliance Protection Plan

Do not deal with Reliance Home Comfort. Worst service ever! I signed up for their protection plan in 2012 and was told at the time I would have complete peace of mind coverage and in case of an emergency someone would come out to take care of my problem. About 2 weeks ago I had my furnace and tank both quit at about 4:00 pm. Called for service and told the rep I needed emergency callout because my furnace and water heater both had quit. I was told someone would be out the next day between 7 am and 11 am. I explained I had no heat or hot water and was told there was nothing that could be done till the next day. When I explained I lived in Northern Ontario and nighttime temperatures drop below zero in the evening I was told sorry and it was suggested I use a space heater. I told them I live in a 1100 square foot home and a space heater would not protect my pipes from freezing if the temperature dropped too much. After a lot of back and forth I was also told there is no emergency callout and I was given the wrong information. I have since asked for a refund on my protection plan because what I was told and what was delivered were 2 different things. In the end terminated my contract, removed my water tank that was 4 years past its expiry and am no longer with Reliance Home Comfort. I am now demanding a full refund of my Protection Plan to the date of signing up and have also will be reporting this matter to Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada for false and misleading advertising. I have also contacted the CEO of Reliance and am waiting a response. DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY as they are Chinese owned. Find a Canadian firm do deal with. There are a few out there. If you wish to know more please PM me and I will give you a name of a very reputable CANADIAN company that will deliver as promised and not scam you out of your money I contacted the competition Bureau and filed a complaint for false and misleading information. I suggest everyone file as the more complaints they get the better chance they will be investigated and fined.https://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/frm-eng/GH%c3%89T-7TDNA5

3 Year Old Water tank

Contacted by collection to find out that We had a water heater from Reliance few years ago. Never received a single bill or were aware. The account receivable escalation team manager was a rude man who was not interested in resolving this at all. Forcing us to buy the water heater that was being used by some one else and they had possession of it.

Some one needs to start a law suit against these guys due to their disfunctional accounting department and poor ethics and practices.

Bill from 2015

I called last year when I was having an issue with a hot water tank. I was told that was unit was bought out. All of sudden 6 months later I receive a letter from a collection agency saying I owed over $1,000 for my contract with reliance. I asked the a/r department from Reliance to prove that I received any bills. They have never proved any bills. I phone customer service today and they said that there is "several accounts here under your phone number". It looks like that system was a buy out. I was sent to accounts receivable and given to a rude gentleman. I said I have gotten another hot tank and you can come and get yours. They won't do that because I no longer have a contract with them. I asked to speak to the supervisor's manager. He was not there and I would have to call back. If I had a contract and I owed $1,000 won't the equipment still be Reliance? I am not paying or a bill from 2014/2015. Won't you be looking for your equipment i I owed you? How do we resolve this? They are a terrible company just looking or more money. What company lets a bill go that long without coming to get their equipment. The equipment is here for their pick up.

Accounting Department

Well, I am glad there is a place to voice the practice of Reliance's finance department. We had our furnaces installed in September 2016. They did not take the funds out our credit card until December 2016. Our credit card company had a issue with the charge and asked Reliance to correct the coding on the payment on their internal system. They did not listen. Next thing you know the funds were return to our credit card company (but they did not tell us) and the credit card company left it on hold. Then Reliance says pay or we are taking you to court. Really - because they did not follow the advice of their financial institution, we are being told that we would be sued.

No apology........

unethical and unprofessional

1) I was billed wrongly twice and it took me an hour to make them understand to waive me the additional charge

2) I was shouted at by someone from their retention team and i wanted to complain. I asked her to forward the call to the complaint team and she hung up. I called them again, she apologized for hanging up and then after 5 min, she said the complaint team would call me back. It's been 48 hours and haven't received a call yet

3) The customer service people are poorly trained and thy use lingo so that customers like us don't understand the whole story.

This is not a cooked up story. I have a reference code from them and a name (fake name perhaps?)

I feel very unfortunate to be shouted at despite living in a country like Canada! I felt humiliated!

I will never deal with them again

Billing for a tank long gone

My tank was picked up in Dec 2013 by reliance , I bought my own after realizing how much i could save by doing so . Somewhere in the middle of 2014 i received a bill from home comfort that I was behind and needed to pay up before they go to collections agency. I called explained about there mess up and they said they would take care of it after seeing on there records that this tank was picked up along time before that and I thought it was done.

Today Jan 2015 again another bill saying that I need to pay or they would call collections agency. There seems to be a mis communication between home comfort and the water tank service . regardless I have 15 days to pay so I call straighten things out for the second time and ask for them to send me a final payment and closed account paperwork for my records .

I'll get it in 2 - 4 weeks . WTF !!!

I'm in the middle of buying a house and I might get a notch on my credit score in 15 days and the earliest they can give me confirmation is 2 - 4 weeks of a closed account from 2013 .....

Stay away from this company.

wrong service call time!

Absolutely furious! have booked a morning apt to have my water heater changed. 7- 11 time frame! Called at 10:30 to check if they were coming and was told NO not til between 4 and 8!! I gave up a day of work to schedule this--- moved my car , caged my pet--no easy feat and now I am told No I have the wrong time. I had a water heater inspection on June 3/14 and set this appt then. It is written on my yellow copy --- for june 13 TODAY for the AM time frame!! Furious. Now my whole day is this . add that to the first day for inspection and I have given up 2 full days of work!! Furious! Even an apology for the error but argued with that I have the wrong time. No way does AM look like PM and I remember asking for it and writing it on my calendar at the time of setting it. Grrrrrr!
