Rude Immigration Officer

I wonder if relevant authority will take any action on the complaints that we posted here? Oh well, its worth knowing anyways. We went for family vacation to Singapore on 12th to 15th July 2014. Despite the expensive logistics like hotels, dining, transport as well as shopping, I always have my preference to Singapore due to its cleanliness. Travelling with me were my husband, 10 year old, 11 months old baby and my maid.

Arrival at Singapore Changi on 12th July was an amazing experience, the immigration officer was chatty and very accommodating. That was a good start to the most anticipated family vacation. We spent the first 2 days in Singapore meeting up with friends and families residing in Singapore, a little bit of sightseeing, shopping and enjoy the dining experience.

on 14th July 2014, we have pre-planned a day trip to Legoland, Malaysia. We had limo with driver and entry tickets all sorted out in advanced. We were so excited and our driver is such a helpful man. We reached the first checkpoint, Causeway Singapore at about 11.15 - 11.30 am. We went off the van to get our passport chopped. There were not many people and we got into a vacant counter line. We all went through and my husband took our passports out of the file.

The immigration officer (a Chinese lady in her late 30's) gave us a frowning look, she looked at us one by one and did not say anything. Confused by her "unwelcoming expression", my husband asked her if there's any problem?. She answered in high-pitched voice "NEXT TIME COME IN ONE BY ONE SO THAT ITS EASY FOR ME TO CHECK THE PASSPORT". Shocked and embarrassed, my husband quickly asked her "OH...SORRY, YOU CAN OPEN THE BAR AND WE CAN QUEUE BACK, ITS NOT A BIG DEAL..." The officer did not reply and say anything leaving us more confused, but she "snatched" our passports from my husband's hand and started to chop them in a forceful manner pressing the chop hard to the table to make an annoying sound each passport. While she was doing that, I was already irritated and observing her, trying to get her name from name tags. I realised that the officer did not wear her uniform appropriately (which i believe immigration officers are strictly told to abide) - No name tag, the area where name tag supposed to be looks ripped with thread dangling, her hair was in her face.

All passports checked, she returned the passport rudely by slapping them on the table top. I couldn't help it, took the passports and told her "NEXT TIME IT WOULD BE NICE IF YOU COULD AT LEAST SMILE, IT DOESN'T KILL TO SMILE" (she looked like she was really mad at us as if we killed her mother). To my surprised she responded while raising her arms/hands in the air stretching "I DO NOT OWE YOU ANY SMILE". Goodness...how rude can she be...she is lack of manners too!!! Is this the kind of officer Singapore hires to be the frontliner to sell your country? I was carrying my 11 months old baby and was too eager to just get her face out of my way, or else, I would have taken the matter for authorities to take action. I just responded to her "YOU DON'T OWE ME ANY SMILE, BUT I SUPPOSE YOU DO OWE YOUR JOB A PLEASANT/GOOD ATTITUDE/MANNERS!!!

It was such an unexpected and unpleasant experience coming from a beautiful country like Singapore. Having this kind of personnels under your roof seriously put a black mark to tourists and outside world. I hope better screening done when hiring such individuals. The immigration officer could have triggered and spoilt my day, i was considering other places for family vacation in the future, NO MORE Singapore, all because of one irresponsible Singaporean.

I was not alone, i saw number of frustrations from visitors to Singapore : http://sammyboy.com/showthread.php?21503-Rude-immigration-officer-shouted-at-visitor
