Power bill

I and my 94 year old mother are both on social security, we live next door to each other. Due to her age, I pay all of her bills. We have two separate checking accounts at the same bank. I pay our bills on the computer through our checking accounts. In Feb. 2018
we each received our hard copies of our power bills. I paid the amount that was stated on my mothers bill as being owed, I also paid the amount was stated as being owed on my bill to Alabama power co. The next month mother received a notice that she had not paid her bill for the previous month and her power was about to be disconnected,I went to Alabama power to see what the problem was. I found out that both bills that I had paid was applied to my bill and nothing had been applied to my mothers account, so I had them apply the amount that she owed to her account. I received a bill from Alabama power the next month stating that I owed $800.00, we both live alone, When I inquired about the amount owed on my bill, it was explained to me by someone from Alabama power co. that when they applied the amount that mother owed from my account that it left me with a deficit. How can I have a deficit when both bills were paid exactly what was on the statements. The bills go to two different addresses with two different account numbers and if they looked at my bill would they not have seen that my bill was much more that what I owed. This just does not make sense to me.
