Financial Aid
I began at Ashford University in 2014 and requested full loans so that I could live while in classes. I am to graduate in two months. Three months before graduation I had to contact the school because I crunched the numbers and realized that what the school had been telling me about graduating debt free was, in fact, a lie. It took three phone calls before the financial aid department responded with, oh yeah we are seeing that you will owe us a balance and if you don't pay we will keep you from receiving a copy of your diploma. Now being a disabled student, I notified them I was living on nothing and did not appreciate the fact that they have given me no time to gather other funding, the financial department responded with, they didn't care that they wanted money. I placed complaints with numerous groups because the school owes me an estimated $8.000.00 in student aid stipends. Their lawyer responded with the school has never been told of any disability on my part. What? I have been utilizing their disability services since 2015, under Access and Wellness, yet they are unaware of me being a disabled student? I was also informed by the Attorney General that the school claims to have given me $2,000 over the course of 4 years and that is enough to live on. This caused me to laugh out loud since I am certain their corporate attorney wouldn't be satisfied with such a low amount to live on for 4 years. My FAFSA over the last 4 years also says differently. What became clear, is that the school itself has no responsibility regarding their student's welfare. I found out also through research that the University of the Rockies is a sister University to Ashford, and is owned by Bridgeport also.
Don't get me wrong, I have learned a lot during my time as a student with Ashford, and am excited to have another undergrad degree. But the lack of responsibility toward their students, makes me regret ever having enrolled with them. So do yourself a favor, don't fall for their selling tactics. If you want a good paying job, education won't impact that experience will. These guys are a business, and have no problem, placing students in debt right before graduation!
