BB&T Unethical Overdraft Fees

For over 3 or more years now BB&T bank has manipulated the dates my credits and debits post to my account in order to create over draft fees. This also includes overdraft fees that are triggered by maintenance fees, and fees that are taken against a pending transaction. My bill payments were on automatic which gave them the upper hand, I was told it’s because I opted in the overdraft program which meant I could overdraft the account if I need to, however this program allows them to return items unpaid, and charge me an overdraft fee anyway. I can’t win, and I can’t close the account until it is current which is almost impossible because the charge more fees every week, all of my credits are eaten up by overdraft fees. I’ve now canceled all of my automatic credits, & debits which was a huge inconvenience, and I still have to pay BB&T. I am convinced that this is a scam, and/or an unethical manipulation of the banking system, and it must stop in the month of February alone I have paid over $2000 in fees to BB&T, and they’re still charging me. I find it both unethical & fraudulent. I expected my debits, and credits to be processed in the order in which they are presented, and any unauthorized manipulation of my account should be illegal.

BB&T steals your money

BB&T has been charging us overdraft fees when we have funds in our account. They refuse to put the money back and say it is not a bank error. We make transactions or pull money out and have enough funds in our account to make those transactions but they still charge us overdraft fees. In 2 weeks they have charged us over $200 in overdraft fees when they shouldn't have. They are the worst bank I have ever had to deal with and their customer service is horrible. I hope someone files a lawsuit against them, I would back it up. I have printed off where they have made their mistakes and trying to take it to a bank manager but apparently none of the branches have bank managers or they are never in the office. I have talked to the Executive and he told us that they were legitimate fees even tho he went through the transactions and said there was not enough funds. When I went through what he went through and said even after the $108 overdraft fee we still have $168 in the bank. So there are funds in there and he turned around and said it was because of transactions that was posted days after that which we also got overdraft fees for. This bank is absolutely the worst and suggest anyone to NEVER bank with them.

Criminal Non Sufficient Funds/Overdraft Fees

The way BB&T processes transactions is criminal! The account appears to be in the positive, taking into account outstanding transactions, yet something happens behind the scene. Checks that should clear bounce even when there are enough funds to cover the checks in the account. Perhaps BB&T places a hold on scheduled future withdrawals...? In any case, BB&T charges a $36 fee for each bounced check, reducing available funds and causing other good checks to bounce... For each bounced (or overdraft) check, independent of amount, BB&T charges a $36 fee. I was charged $36 on a returned $2 check. Seriously??? If any of the bounced checks are re-deposited, that means even more fees because now the funds really aren't there... because of the BB&T fees. I think they prioritize the order in which they deduct the checks to their advantage, creating more instances of fees that could have been avoided. It snowballs into a mound that causes a negative balance made up of BB&T fees! Just this month, BB&T has already charged my account at least $300-400 in OD/NSF fees... and we are not even halfway through the month! I wasn't expecting ANY of my checks to bounce. The $36 fees add up quickly. There should be a law against this kind of customer abuse. It is a criminal scam. This is not right. I also strongly support a lawsuit against them.

Closing account, monthly fee and overdraft fee

When I found out Cities Bank in our area was being bought out by BB&T, we decided to close our account with Cities Bank. We heard BB&T was not a good bank to deal with. Mind you this all started in May of 2014. Whenever I went into Citi Bank to close the account they would not close my checking account only my savings. I was told I needed to wait and make sure everything cleared my account. I had no activity for 3 weeks on the account so could not understand the reasoning. So waited and went back before the end of May. When I went back to close the account before the first of June I was told that I could not close the account because they were making the transfer from Citi Bank to BB&T. So again was not able to close the account. So now my $14.39 left in the Citi Bank account has a $20.00 service fee asserted, so not the account in in overdraft, now another charge for $35.00. Now I have been going to now BB&T 2 to 3 times a month to get this resolved with no luck. So I decided to call Citi Bank (since we do not have a local branch) to try and clear this up. Finally after getting upset with Citi Bank stating everything was transfered to BB&T, I told them I would not hangup or I would make continuous call every 10 minutes if I did not speak to a supervisor or higher. Shameful I have to threaten people to get results. So finally, long story short got the account fixed with Citi Bank in October. Now we start all over again with BB&T. Bought the paperwork in from Citi Bank and now want to close the account with them. What ever need to be done. I told them I would even pay money to close the account just to get the calling to stop about my delinquent account. Again many excuses about they would look into the problem and call me. Now this was dealing with the branch in downtown Bryan 12 separate times. Finally after many trips to that branch I decided to go to the main branch and needless to say I am on my 3rd time with the main branch and still nothing is settled. Again offered money to close the account and by the way BB&T transferred my account to a collection agency. RUN as fast as you can from this bank. I think they want to see how long they can keep assessing fees to this account before we take legal action or just pay all the fees. Now they are saying they will just try to close the account with me oweing them nothing. I do not see that happening. I think I will run in the bank with a $39.40 cashiers check and and all the paperwork copies and run out maybe they will close the account? Only a thought and the story goes on.

Over charged

If you bank with BB&T, hold on to your wallet--these greedy SOBs are going to be coming after its contents. They charged us over $70, because my account went $0.32 negative for one week. This is an institution to which we make over $19,000 in monthly loan payments.
