Poor quality of education

Rafael Anaya
(909)222-8927

I can't describe in words how I feel about the quality of education I received at DeVry and how terrible the student loans have impacted my life. I enrolled into DeVry a few years after I graduated high school and their marketing filled my head with dreams and ambition, I visualized myself obtaining the career I've always wanted when and if I graduated from their University. Needless to say I had an impossible time understanding my professors as they had broken accents that were difficult for me to understand, the semesters were accelerated 8 week courses that were way too fast to absorb any new information that I all ready had trouble comprehending. All in all I was forced to withdraw from the University because I didn't want to keep pulling out loans for an education that I really wasn't receiving. That was 10 years ago, and I am embarrassed to say that after all these years, I never received any degrees and I have been in and out of work in the construction field trying to make a living to repay my student loans. Thanks a lot DeVry I hope your enjoying the $30,000.00 that I fight every day of my life to pay back. I'm positive there are many more individuals such as myself are suffering the same way I am, the refund policies are a joke and we need help!

Subject: Complaints, FRAUD and SCAM of DeVry Institute of Technology

Hi ,

This is a big problem for DeVry's credibility and for my fake Degree I got from DeVry Institute of Technology. How come DeVry screwed me up with this gigantic problem that occurred by borrowing me all these money that doesn’t have return on investment for me? I’m extremely embarrassed and ashamed. I have fallen victim to predatory unmanageable from the get go by DeVry's fake offerings. This is a SCAM by DeVry Institute of Technology that took place in 1989.
I don’t need any more sympathy. How can DeVry Institute of Technology rescue me or discharge my debt that I never made any return on investment with my degree?
DeVry is taking advantage with Bank who make these student loans were irresponsible to begin with – it is also their fault if they are making loans to people
Believing they will obtain employment in a given career to pay for it, when there are no jobs available in that career. I was lied and mislead by DeVry.
It sounds like they are putting out bad debt where those lenders took bad risks, where they are also to blame. They have to be accountable for this reason I'm not please by misleading and coerced approach. Now they are finding someone to blame like pointing figures. What DeVry Institute of Technology did to me was unacceptable and illegal. That signature was not my signature. That financial aid department and admission office did that kind of deceit to me student was unethical. I lost faith in our school system and made me feel terrible inside. What I have outlined here is only part of the problem. All I want in return for fulfilling our responsibilities as a law abiding tax payer citizen is to be treated fairly and equally.

I think it’s illegal for them to raise the interest rates and accrued on a student loan? That financial aid office(please see the attached document) who made these student loans were irresponsible to begin with – it is also their fault if they are making loans to people believing they will obtain employment in a given career to pay for it, when there are no jobs available in that career. You can’t force people to pay for that loan that was not signed legitimately.
I strongly object to a system that is blatantly discriminatory and unfair to law-abiding Americans living inside our country. I now feel like second class citizens at best, or criminals at worst. The message given here, along with the enormous fines for improper signature, make me feel terrible and as a citizens
So I’m asking you and let’s do those positive things that make us a great nation & improve the quality of our school system first for our country. Then we will effect positive change in others for our country.
I need a resolution on this matter soon. I never thought I’d be in this situation at my age. Here in I hoping to raise my family in a better future with opportunities and fulfilling dreams. But all I have gotten is cheated, grief and struggled.
Also, Sallie Mae, now known as Navient has been under heavy criticism over the past few months following allegations of overcharging its service members for my student loans. It is estimated that over $1.2 trillion is owed by approximately 40 million Americans and most of these have been irregularly charged late fees on the student loans. The organization has been under investigations by different agencies including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp and the department of justice. Student loans have become the worst kind of debt for many Americans and many are drowning therein.

Secondly, I was Ripped Off From DeVry Institution of Technology School and Student Loan Borrower. I started feeling terrible. Getting a job was hard and calls from Citi Bank Sallie Mae started driving me crazy. I started slipping into the dark pit of debts and even doing something worthwhile was a pipe dream. I didn't know how to change my situation and started worrying about myself and family. At that time what happened classes that I took there I could have taken it at the Community college and it would have been 20.00 dollars per unit vs. 600.00 dollars in DeVry . What happened was that the signature that was signed was not mine on the loan application from the financial aid office from DeVry School of Technology. They forced and mislead me to take those classes. I was unsatisfied with the quality of the education. Instead of getting a technical education class a 100 % hand-on, I was told and taught accounting, psychology, humanity, literature class that I was misled, lied and should have taken it cost effectively in community college . I was charged without my knowledge $40, 000 dollars. The loan started and now it is $150,000.00. Navient is the servicer now. It used to be Citibank then Sallie Mae but now they changed it to Navient. When you have more administrators making $200,000 a year in DeVry than Instructors, you have something wrong. I think it’s illegal for them to raise the interest rates and accrued on my student loan that was given to me by DeVry. Please see the attached financial aid office attached document. Those student loans were irresponsible to begin with – it is also their fault if they were making loans to naïve student like myself believing they will obtain employment in a given career to pay for it, when there are no jobs available in that career. You can’t force people to pay for that loan that was not signed and misleading and coerced me.

Finally, I’m asking and want America to hear my complaints about the companies that service student loans. “misleading classes and unknown signature Student loan forms the debt stressed, depressed and made me feel like they are walking and don’t care. Please help.
The schools and banking industry has acted illegally and irresponsibly with the student loans, with the government aiding it, encouraging it. It has to change, and we need to hold those institutions accountable. Currently they are not hold accountable – it’s all about short term profit, etc., greedy profit making more money. Most of our politicians and so called leaders will always tell you that they came from poor beginnings but....look at where they are today. "Bling"!!! Why do they say that? Think about it? Why would you say that? It’s all about the money & power.
Don't get me wrong, education is the best concept and everyone should prosper as long as they’re honest and work hard but.....not at the expense of others. Absolutely never!
When was the last time you met a person who's goal was not money but for the betterment of mankind?
I strongly object to a system that is blatantly discriminatory and unfair to law-abiding Americans living inside our country. I now feel like second class citizens. The message given here, along with the enormous fines for improper signature, make me feel terrible and as a law abiding American citizen.
So I’m asking you to be able to discharge (cancel) and forgiveness due to improper signature and mislead by the curriculum. And at that time what happened classes that I took there I should have taken it at the Community college and it would have been 20.00 vs. 600.00. What happened is that the signature is not mine on the loan application from the financial aid office at DeVry School of Technology forced me take those classes and I was misled, lied to me and gave me the wrong curriculum that I didn't want.

I am asking a resolution on this matter soon. I never thought I’d be in this situation at my age. Here in I hoping to raise my family in a better future with opportunities and fulfilling dreams. But all I have gotten is cheated, grief and struggled. Please help.

Regretfully yours,

By the way, this is for your own personal information. DeVry Institute of Technology school was closed down long time ago.

Please see some facts about DeVry .
DeVry In 1995, DeVry was suspended from Ontario's student loan program after a large number of its students misreported their income. DeVry was reinstated after paying fines of C$1.7 million and putting up a bond of C$2 million.

In November 2000, Afshin Zarinebaf, Ali Mousavi and another graduate of one of DeVry University's Chicago-area campuses filed a class-action lawsuit accusing DeVry of widespread deception, unlawful business practices and false advertising and alleging that students were not being prepared for high-tech jobs. The lawsuit contributed to a 20% slide in the company's stock. The class was not certified and the case was resolved for less than $25,000 in June 2006.

In January 2002, Royal Gardner, a graduate of one of DeVry University's Los Angeles-area campuses, filed a class-action complaint against DeVry Inc. and DeVry University, Inc. on behalf of students in the post-baccalaureate degree program in Information Technology. The suit alleged that the nature of the program was misrepresented by the advertising. The lawsuit was dismissed and refiled. During the first quarter of 2004, a new complaint was filed in the same court by Gavino Teanio with the same general allegations. This action was stayed pending the outcome of the Gardner lawsuit. The lawsuits were being settled in late 2006.

In April 2007, the State of New York settled with three schools that were participating in questionable student-loan practices. DeVry, Career Education Corporation, and Washington University in St. Louis were involved with the settlement. DeVry agreed to refund $88,122 to students.

In 2008, DeVry was accused of filing false claims and statements about recruitment pay and performance to the government.

In January 2013, a lawsuit was filed by a former manager at DeVry which alleged that the college bribed students for positive performance reviews and worked around federal regulations on for-profit colleges. In April 2013, the attorney generals of Illinois and Massachusetts issued subpoenas to DeVry to investigate for violations of federal law and filing false information about loans, grants, and guarantees. In July 2014, DeVry stated that the New York state attorney general's office was investigating if the company's marketing violated laws against false advertising.

Senator Tom Harkin's report on the for-profit college industry revealed that DeVry's tuition for an associate degree is 10 times higher than at community colleges; it has a dropout rate of 50 percent (60 percent for online students) within a median of 3 1/2 months; spending per student of less than $3,000 per year on education, about a quarter of what is spent by the University of Illinois; a CEO salary of $6.3 million, 46 times more than the president of the University of Illinois; and evidence of deceptive recruiting of students. Two state attorneys general, Illinois and Massachusetts, are investigating DeVry.

DeVry Institute of Technology was a major for-profit school until its collapse many years ago.

DeVry Institute of Technology was seen as one of the worst for-profit school chains before it went out of business many years ago. I was defaulted on federal loans in the 1991 of paying them back.

But I didn’t usually just get a break on their loans because I went to a terrible school. I found that they lied to me at LA, City of Industry of its campuse about what they could expect in the job market. And an obscure phrase in federal student loan law means that as a result, I think I was defrauded not have to pay my loans back.

l have submitted how DeVry Institute of Technology violated state law, how I was hurt by the misconduct, and how it affected my decision-making. Once I applied, their loans will go into forbearance — meaning they won't need to make payments, although interest will continue to pile up I should get the balance $150,000 forgiven. Also, it can prevent future students from suffering the same fate, the system doesn't do much for the students who graduated and found themselves unable to meet their financial obligations.
