Favoritism

My store manager hired her soon to be sister-in-law. This girl worked one full month and then took 6 weeks off to have surgery. Literally a week after her return this girl was promoted to full time lead! I had been waiting 2 months to be promoted to the same position. I was there the whole time working hard and not once calling off. Manager kept giving me excuses as to why I hadn't been promoted yet. They FINALLY gave me the position after 3 months of promising it to me. However I am still part time (after being promised full time) and still hearing lame excuses. Manager and her future sister-in-law are always making sure they are scheduled to work together. They are always loud and follow each other around like puppy dogs. Where one goes So does the other. Their loud laughter is disruptive to our customers. I am just tired of manager treating this girl like her pet. I believe we should all be treated professionally and equal.

Manager expects things out of me that he doesn't expect from the other employees.

I have been employed with DG since January 2017. When I was hired I was given the part time key associate position along with a dollar raise. I have not been trained nor given my raise yet. When I asked the new manager about this he said he didn't know anything​ about it. Well since then the full time key associate has been named the Asst. Manager, and he has hired an outsider​ to replace her position. I have been trying since day one to get more hours and my raise. Now he told a fellow co-worker that he isn't going to make me a key holder because there are times when he has tried to call me and can't reach me and he needs me to be available at his beck and call. But he has asked every employee at our store if they want the position and they all said no. Most of them only work nights because they either go to school or have another job. I am raising my 5yr.old grandson so asked that if they can give me some notice they want me to come in so I can get a babysitter. I believe he is descriminating against me because A.I'm a single parent, B. My age C. I'm too white for him. All I know is he has dropped my hours down to 17 hrs. A week. I don't know what to do, please let me know something. Thank you. JoAnn Johnston

Manager

Manager has her favorites. Started about 2 months ago. I know my job well as I am assistant manager and have done the job before. Manager treats me as if I'm an LSA. The lsa is doing my job more then me. Manager and LSA get upset when I have a day off and do not go in when LSA wants to leave cause she doesn't wanna close. I close more then manager who is only closing 1 night a week. LSA only closes 1 or 2 nights a week cause she doesn't like to. Manager refuses to hire a part time LSA to help with closings. Hires her friends and gives them all day hours. Can't complain to DM cause he doesn't care . Manager and LSA constantly late on 6am days and manager will leave earlier then her scheduled shift. Staying just until I can find a new job. If the manager would give me my responsibilities then she wouldn't be so stressed and tired but doesn't wanna let go of that power.

Report all complaints to Whistleblower Hotline

DG does claim that a third party will take the case and handle it outside DG. It is okay to request only strict communications from this third party only once a case is started and strictly refuse any channel of communication through DG as a meditator. Any other way would provide opportunity for bias in the process and be even further unethical.

If at any time the investigation seems unyielding, seek legal consultation. Constantly request updates on the case if not daily but frequently. Get names and dates of who you correspond with.

Punch Out?

DG is just a part time thing for me to kill time in the evenings or on the weekends.I must say this is a very interesting place to work and I don't mean in a good way. They seem to have no concept of anything that most retailers would consider Standard Operating Practices. For example, when someone brings products to the counter with a tag that clearly says $3 each or 2 for $5 and they don't ring up correctly so you call the MOD to fix it and they agonize over changing the price even though its in front of them in black and white you have to wonder. One other night I closed with this same MOD and the rules state both closers walk out together. We were there past the time she thought we should be because of an issue and she told me I needed to go punch out, so I in turn told her that was fine but she needed proceed to the front of the store with me and lock the door behind me because I was leaving if I had to punch out because I don't work for free, especially for crooks like DG.

Unethical Management

Shaun F was hired at Dollar General in Fairmount, IN. His first day to start was 6/8/2014. Shaun also shared that his significant other is 9 months pregnant. Shaun called Brandi (Store Manager) the June 7th and informed her that his significant other is in pre-labor and will be having their baby anytime. Brandi stated that when that happens to contact someone to let them know. On June 8th approximately 10:00am a family member called the store to tell them that his wife/girlfriend is in full labor and already admitted into the hospital and if we should call the manager at home. Female employee stated "No, she would probably still be asleep on her day off". Employee said she could text the Brandi and let her know the situation and let her know we are requesting a call and would like to speak with her so Shaun wouldn't stress over losing his job or missing his child's birth. About 30 minutes later I texted Brandi and explained that Shaun was at the hospital getting ready to have a baby and that he was pretty worried about missing his first day of work but really needs to be there for his childs birth. I again requested a response. Brandi never responded or tried to contact Shaun. Approximately an hour later I contacted the store and ask if employee had made contact with Brandi and she said "Yes". She went on to say that she was sorry but Brandi said if he doesn't show up at his designated time then he is fired. I then informed Shaun what was said and then we discussed his options. Shaun apologized to his girlfriend but he had to have this job. I then called the store back so Shaun could spend every minute in the labor room. Same female employee answered and I told her that Shaun would in fact be there at his designated time. A couple family members left the hospital in Anderson to take Shaun to work. When Shaun walked in the store he was immediately told to go home that he no longer has a job because "they have a business to run and do not have time for your games". Still scratching my head on what games she is talking about. How would he even been able to play games before when this was his very first day? Shaun was extremely distraught as he not only lost his job for NO REASON at all but he also missed his childs birth. I then called Brandi to see what was going on as I was worried about Shaun at this point. I ask Brandi why Shaun was fired when he showed up on time. Brandi made a derogatory remark about why his mother is calling for him when he is 25 years old (because Shaun was to distraught to be speaking to anyone at this time). Brandi stated that Shaun had already called off yesterday (for today's 6/8/14 shift) and that is why he is being let go. Why would she have told the female employee that if he didn't show up he would be fired if she was basing it off of yesterdays call off. Shaun didn't actually call off yesterday but was only giving Brandi a "heads up" about the possible birth of his child. Everyone I have discussed this with is just beside their self and have never heard of this happening before, especially when he was told if he didn't show today he would be fired. I personally believe that Brandi wanted to get rid of Shaun anyway because there is another fairly new girl working there that does not like Shaun and, Brandi appears to be somewhat impressionable by others and would rather impress the more popular employee. I would just like to know what the REAL reason for this horrible situation.

an employee at the dollar general store here in Rutherford TN. IS TRYING TO RUIN CUSTOMERS REPUTATIONS BY TELLING LIES AND GOSSIPPING ABOUT THEM TO OTHER CUSTOMERS WHILE ON THE JOB.......SHE SHOULD BE FIRED!!!!

rude employee's very rude and a sorry a manager, i never got paid for my 1st week worked and it was very high amount of hours, i heard numerous amount of rumours said frum manager and enough for me to believe, ive called to file complaints to the corporate and yet i still havent heard nothing back no calls and heard nothing been said or done to manager and still yet have not ben paid frum my 1st week!! and i dnt work with dg nomore and i still hear things manager has ben saying about me and i am very upset and dnt like it at all i would like somethng to be said or done to the manager where i was working or somebody realy needs to put her in her place!!!

Tired Manager

I am at the point that I hate my job and I am certain most managers would agree. We suffer from the trickle down syndrome everyday, the people above us can not possibly make up their minds, not that would be too easy to do. I would like to know who comes up with some of these new "policies". Is it someone at corporate, divisional, regional, dm, or who??? I am pretty certain that kkr is not stupid, but what i believe is happening is one person says do this, then this one adds their two bits, then the next, and the next, and by the time it gets to us well its just a gaggly old mess and near to impossible to filter and accomplish. Not to mention when kkr took over most of the old timers bailed out and now we have all these people tring to make a name for themself at our expense not to mention jeapordizing our safety. To be such a profitable company you would think that they could at least give us enough payroll to allot for things to be done as well as have double coverage at all times. Obviously, no one at corporate has ever had a gun pointed at them. Its just not right. I believe a 7% payroll is acceptable and doable but how come I only get 5% and thats stretching it. And why so many logs, model store, how is my rm and dm benefiting from this? I understand cleanliness but give me the tools to accomplish it! And give me the tools to maintain it. A stupid color coded wall is not going to help me do that, a void log isnt going to help me. Deligation isnt going to help me either when I am the only one there. And for gods sake rewrite the deposit policy where it states a non key carrier cant take the dep to the bank and you cant leave a non key carrier alone in the store so i am not at risk by having to do that off hours creating dangerous patterns for myself. If your going to write a policy write it as if it is for you, or for your childs mother. Most of us managers are women and mothers. Take care of us and stop putting us at risk.

Tired Manager

my complaint is that i have been working with dollar general for 3 years now. i use to like my job but now i hate going, the manager there is a female who has her favorite, i can be putting the truck out and her and the male stocker take off to the break-room and sit around break-room and carrying on, now i thought that we were a team, well not at the store i work at, i have just started a night job and told my manager about it and she tells me i have to choose between one or the other. now how come i am the only one she is telling this to, there are others that have either night school or a side job and nothing is said to them. now i bust my butt while I'm working and the assistant manager even sees it, this woman is unfair, she is not management material. something should be done about her and the way she treats people.

Protection of assets

These comments are completely accurate, and SHOULD BE EXPOSED IN A VERY PUBLIC MANNER. I have been an Asst. for one year and can attest to DG's ruthless lack of payroll to engender double coverage, especially on Sundays when the Assts. usually have to work 6-7 hours alone!! There are stretches of time at the store, particularly at opening (8am) in our region where we may not see customer #1 for 20-30 minutes; within this time frame I could be robbed and/or killed with no aid for another 15 min. or so.
The company is averse to being an open-door entity as the claim, while providing themselves with huge margins versus payroll budgeting. Human rights provides I can urinate, eat, and be allowed breaks from time to time, so when I need to pee by God the almighty customers wait.
These are ruthless corporatists who run this small box like a litter box and wreek of compassion for their employees, let alone their fellow man.

Protection of assets

I have worked retail for many years and for a couple large retailers. I took a job with Dollar General Stores, Inc. as a SMC, store manager candidate. I was floored to find out that they allow only one employee to work by themselves for sometimes an entire shift. They call this single coverage. How can someone working take a break, eat or drink something, or even use the restroom? Is this even legal? Protection of assets? EVERYWHERE I have worked in the past requires that two people work together. Entering the store and leaving the store. It protects your most valuable assets, your employees and the company's assets. Impossible to do with single coverage. I can not believe that there is not yet another law suit against Dollar General on this matter. There is no way that this unethical treatment of the employees can be legal.

Protection of assets

It's only against policy to close with one person but, they think it's fine to open and work most of the day with only one. I am a former Mgr. who was cheated out of $3, 000 in bonuses when I left the company after working over (2) years and working a notice. They said I had to be employeed the day the bonuses were sent out. Nevermind that I worked the entire year and made their inventory numbers and the entire period and met and exceeded their sales goals and customer service ratings. The DM's know what's going on. As long as they and the Regionals get their labor bonus, they don't care how many hours you have to work by yourself

Treatment of employees

As a customer or should I say former customer of Dollar General, I can say it is the worst place I have ever seen as far a treatment of employees goes. I know for a fact the DM walked in and fired the Manager on A Saturday morning the first of Feb. 2011, and had the audacity to make one of the Assisstant Mangers work on her days off. The 2 Assisstant managers began working 10 to 14 plus hours a day with the promise of a new manger in a few weeks, it's been a few months and they still have no manager and have been working 60 to 70 hours a week with basically no time off. They look and act very tired, a lot of times I have been in the store only to find just one person working the entire store for hours at a time, usually one of the Assisstants, this has happened on more than one occasion. Why would a company treat people who are so pleasant and hard workers in such a way? I truly feel sorry for them. Dollar General has no family values at all, the only thing they value is the big old dollar. They put their emplyees in danger by having them in the store alone and expect way too much work out of them for what they pay them. They are making millions of dollars a year off the blood of their employees, welcome to big corporate America, I thought slavery had been abolished!

Treatment of employees

I was a part-time cashier at Dollar General and my experience was indifferent. Store Manager, Assistant Manager and Lead Cashier are the only employees that work full-time. It's great to have multiple cashiers, however it's not enough money to survive weekly. I believe a cashier @ GD needs to find second job for my $$$$, unless they are high school or college students that only need some cash. They want their cashiers to restock huge amount of items which is unrealistic if its busy. The only thing I enjoyed was working with a few nice employees, meeting nice customers and being offered other positions by them while cashiering.
I think corp have impractical $$$ goals for their stores. Employees work themselves for sorry benefits and low pay. Promotions within the company is difficult for what I've noticed.
