Door Know

I purchased a EMCO 300 Series Storm Door yesterday - the knob is broken and does not operate. Don't be fooled by the Easy Oops Proof promise. To receive a new knob, I have to send them a copy of my receipt, and serial number of the door. The request will then be reviewed by their warranty department. I was told that I might have a response from them in 3 weeks. (There is not a number to phone in the great US of A - the 800 or 855 number will take you to the Philippines. Good luck with that!) I would return the door except it is already installed - just a broken knob and no way to open it. I will never purchase another EMCO Storm Door again. Had I known!

Emco Oops Proof Warranty

Ok, so I admit it, I screwed up here, but was hopeful.

I am selling my house, and closing is coming up, and one of the items to fix was to replace the storm door. So, I buy a new Emco 200 and start the installation process. As I am finishing up, and about to put the screen and glass panels back in, I see to my dismay that I have installed the door inside out. Everything is perfect, except its reversed. Obviously during some of the test fits, I turned the door around and didn't notice.

As I need this replaced asap, I go buy a second door, and install it, properly this time, and curse my stupidity and having to pay twice for one door. As I am tossing out the box, I see the mention of an "Oops Proof" Installation Warranty that covers missing parts and mi-cuts. So, I give them a call, hoping that maybe I can get a replacement door to use at my new place, or even better, get authorization to return the messed up one for a refund. As I said, I screwed up, but heck, if they offer a warranty to cover it, I'm in!

But nooooo, no such luck. Had I cut something wrong, they would have covered it, but if you mis-drill something, like the holes for the handle, you are S out of luck.

So, the "Oops Proof" warranty is only a warranty if you mess up in an approved manner.

Oops Proof, not so much

So, ok, I admit, I screwed up, I was in a hurry, and in test fitting the door, at some point ended up with the door turned around. I finished the installation, and was about to insert the screen and glass panels back in, and to my dismay realized I have the door backwards. The inside was outside. SOOO, no way the door is going to work in my situation.

As I'm selling the house and need this fixed before closing, I went and bought another door, made sure I have it positioned the right direction and finish the installation. As I am throwing away the box, I see the mention of an "Oops Proof" installation warranty that covers missing parts and mis-cuts. So, who knows, maybe I can get this replaced and be able to use it at my new place? Or maybe be granted permission to return it for a refund (even partial would be nice) so I have only paid for one door?

Noooo, don't be silly, the "Oops Proof" installation warranty doesn't cover mis-drilling any holes. If you cut something wrong, you are golden, drill the handset on the wrong side, out of luck.

Installation

Stay away unless you have the perfect door opening. I mean perfect. Been at it for 2 days now. Granted I didn’t build house and opening is not just lay door on opening and presto just screw in. Every inch of frame is square except when trying to negotiate door. Once in there are gaps on side gaps on top, doesn’t close flush. Either rebuild doorway to match the 45 minute video or walk away. Mot worth time and energy. OOPS PROOF, my foot.

door retainers and closing mechanism

We have a custom storm door that gives us a heart attack each time we have to put the plastic retainers in! They are impossible to put in and break easily. I called the company and after 25 minutes of persuading the employee who was going back and forth with his boss they finally gave me 25% off and then 50% off the replacement parts. They then sent us the replacement parts but the short ones were too wide and the long piece fell out shortly after we thought we had it in. Worst system ever designed! Also, the door hits us in the heels as it closes too fast even after being adjusted. Stay far away from this brand, we spent $550 and the company isn't standing behind their product! We bought it from Home Depot. We have had it 5 years and I'm sure the design is better by now but so frustrating that they won't fix this problem of a door.

EMCO storm doors

Had Home Depot install 2 Andersen EMCO storm doors. Salesman convinced me Home Depot stood behind their products, long after they should have to. Well after a year, a large section of the back door blew out. It was not actually an aluminum door, but rather a veneer or paint over a particleboard like core. Who knew? Not the salesman, I guess. Calls, visits to HD Ocala, emails, letters...no action from them. At under three years the front door began blowing out too. This door is not designed to withstand humidity or water apparently and should not be installed as an exterior storm door. Andersen should clearly announce that in its product detail and HD should be ashamed for selling this junk and then running away from complaints.

Coroded door falling apart

I just had my second Storm door fall apart the hole in it is so big I can put my finger in it. I was told it is under warranted yet (it should be it is my second in 8 years and has a twelve year warranted) I have to bring it in but keep the kick plate, handle set, hinge rail, rain cap latch rail , closer to put on the door. Or pay $76.51 for new ones. I also have to pay someone to do all this for me. I am a 73 year old widow and handle set is Coroded . This is outrages Janet Upton 10474826

Latch will not retract

The spring latch will retract only if I pull the handle up.
Seem that the handle is heavy on the latch therefor the handles stay in "suggy" like position, it's about 1" or 2" from the up position

Dead spring?
Broken?

And if I want a replacement I have to buy the entire kit for $66.00.
Really???
Is this a profit center ? This cost is about 1/2 the cost of a complete new door.

Emco. Now Anderson. Is this what you do to customers ? Sell scream doors with lock system that turns faulty after a year and only place to buy replacement is with you
Nice monopoly or is it?

emco storm doors

I have In the last 3 years replaced emco 400 series storm doors that were rotting and eating away at the aluminum on the doors.Just replaced one 2 years ago and now this one is doing it already. Replaced another one and it was the 400 series and they sent me a 300 because they said the 400 isn't available .Nice warranty just because they don't make it just send me out anything. So this will be a total of 3 doors rotting out in 2-3 years.I installed a menards door and seems nice and eaiser installation don't have to cut side jams on angle for sill they have a adjustable angle plastic piece on bottom. Unbelievable all the time I spent returning doors and reinstalling is NUTS.I think I will be done with EMCO.It has cost me a lot of money and time for something that should last for 20 years.

Wrong latch rail

Purchased the EMCO 400 series from Home Depot, while installing the latch rail for a left handed door, I realized the cutout on the latch rail did not align with the cutout for the door latch. Called CS and after taking measurements of the rail cutout as per CS, they told me that the wrong rail was placed in the box. They said they are sending me the right rail and that it would be 10 days before I received it. So much for a 2 hour install. Also found that the instructions for the door hardware install were backwards. Called them back and they said they would overnight the rail for my problems. Its been 5 days. Not satisfied with the installation instructions or the customer service promise that they would overnight the correct parts, and lastly the lack of English speaking representatives is a big problem.

closer failure

The closer is failing and it's only a year old. The door slams shut. Has this been a frequent problem and is there a solution other than buying another closer? Serial number 0021820311. It's a bottom mounted piston closer with a button locking mechanism.

Emco 400 storm door

I had Home Depot do the install for me so I knew it would be done correctly. Even so, after barely 2 years the spline holding the screen in place came out. I got the whole part replaced and 3 months later, the same thing happened. Since I don't really want to keep throwing good money after bad, I contacted the manufacturer who will do nothing except send me another replacement part (at a discount, haha) which I will have to get installed again. No thanks. Do not waste your time. This is not mid-level, this is crappy and with worse customer service.

Leakage

I am totally agree with you JKSDF. I had similar experience with EMCO storm door. I also got it installed by Home Depot back in 2010. When it started leaking, I got the same response from the EMCO customer service dept. The funny part is when the customer service guy called he does not have any clue or the pic's in front of him and he was just reading the warranty dept., feedback that he got after reviewing my pic's. He also mentioned that storm door is not for “installing outside” that was the most hilarious thing I ever heard.
I guess EMCO lost another customer …
