Robbed in our room while sleeping

The last night of our stay at the RUI Montego Bay Dec 1 2019; someone broke into our 2nd story room through the balcony doors. It happened sometime between 430-530 am. We all had been awake prior to that time and had our phones. My 15 y/o daughter was sleeping on her stomach and had her phone under her and woke up on her back. We never heard or woke at all while this person was going through our stuff. We question that we could of been drugged. They stole 3 iPhone XS and my husband's wallet with appx $200, 3 credit cards which they used and his drivers licenses. Security did not seem to care. They told us this never happens. They asked us if we wanted to go to the Police station to make a report. This really was not an option unless we wanted to miss our flight. I personally feel like this was an inside job and people need to know this resort is NOT SAFE!!!!

Robbery

RIU Hotel and Resort Montego Bay

Jamaica, W.I.

My wife and I vacationed at the RIU Montego Bay Resort from February 10 until February 12, 2017. Sometime around 5:30 a.m., as my wife and I lay asleep, someone entered our hotel room number 6004 and robbed us. First of all, the vacation cost us $2300 and to add insult to injury to have been robbed on the morning of our departure was an atrocity. I am completely distraught over this incident. Apparently, the intruder came in through the patio door. However, neither my wife, nor myself used the patio. My wife and I were placed in imminent danger and could have been killed in the process of being robbed. However, the robber or robbers stole my iPhone 7 and my wife’s Samsung Galaxy S7, $400 in cash and our debit and credit cards and my U.S. Passport Card. Our personal spaces were invaded and this robbery placed us in grave danger. We would have never booked a vacation with your resort had we known that this type of behavior was deemed acceptable or even a possibility. In addition, when the resort security was notified, they seemed lackadaisical and had a nonchalant attitude about the entire event. The security manager, Odaine Wallace, stated after reviewing the cameras that this robbery appeared to be an inside job. However, did not give us any other information. Upon speaking with the occupants in the next room, they stated they had just seen someone at their patio door trying to get in. At that point, another resort guest and I, ran out the door trying to catch or see who the assailant was. During this attempt, the other resort guest fell and broke his wrist trying to haphazardly attempt to catch this unknown assailant. However, he was unable to due to the slipperiness of the patio deck from the rain. I can assure you that my wife and I will never book another vacation with this resort, unless definitive measures are taken. Although we were spared our lives, our lives were placed at risk because had either of us awaken a struggle would have ensued. My cell phone was sitting on the nightstand next to our bed. My wife’s cell phone was placed on a charger on top of the refrigerator counter top. The value of the stolen items will be expensive to replace. First of all, for the price of this vacation, security should have been much tighter. However, we were not notified if security cameras were in place and in use and whether or not the cameras led your establishment to know the unknown assailant. In hindsight, I realized that a robber had the audacity to enter our room with us there, then we truly were in grave danger. The occupant in the next room stated that someone was peering in their patio door. Upon speaking with the security and informed him that I had a tracker on my phone and notified him of the whereabouts of my cell phone. Unfortunately, the timing of this robbery occurred within an hour and half of our departure flight and we could not make contact with Jamaica Police, however they were called. An incident report was completed at the resort regarding this robbery. I feel that the time, effort, hurt, anger and loss of personal possession was something that a guest at a established resort should never have to endure. My wife and I should be compensated for our valuables and the mental anguish and trauma of being robbed at your establishment. We will be awaiting your response. Unfortunately, we feel that we must contact your corporate office to discuss the details of this robbery because of the insincerity of all individuals involved after being victimized. After speaking with your front desk personnel, Mr. Francisco Pouilo, that he could not contact me and that I needed to contact him regarding this incident. This tragic event is unacceptable for any guest to have to endure at your resort!

Sincerely,

Alvin Lumpkin Jr. and Brittany Lumpkin
