Rusting on the cover by the hinges

I called Sears about the rust and was told the machine is off warrentey. It was pur fault for the rust because we are doing laundry wrong.And on the tub is warrentied. My old washer lasted 20 with no rust no problem. I told her it must be defect and was told mo it is not defected
